Since the early twentieth century, this is considered one of Barcelona's most fashionable streets, with buildings designed by modernista/Art Nouveau architects of fame such as Antoni Gaudí, Pere Falqués, Josep Puig i Cadafalch, Lluís Domènech i Montaner, Enric Sagnier and Josep Vilaseca.

The bullfight, a centuries' old practice, has long been associated with what constitutes the essence of Spain: bravado, blood, hot sun, high drama. However, lately, it is now a subject of great controversy. There are those who still live from and for what they consider an art form, and those who abhor it, calling it an act of brutality and an activity which should now be banned. Watch the video to see both sides of the matter...and decide for yourself.
"I'm Fernando Preciado, the vice president of the Happy Brotherhood of the Burial of the Sardine of Madrid..." With those first words, Fernando introduces us to a short history of this unusual yearly ritual, that takes place on Ash Wednesday: a procession through the center of the city; an homage to the sardine, read out by the mayor, followed by music by a live band, dancing, drink and food. In the evening, the sardine is buried in the park, amidst much weeping and carrying on.
